Hugh Freeze comments on Auburn's quarterback battle
There is one question that all Auburn fans want answered: who will quarterback the Tigers in 2024?
Auburn has a handful of options at quarterback, some of the veteran capacity and some younger. Which quarterback Freeze chooses to lead his team next season could depend on which direction he wants to go with the roster.
If Coach Freeze wants to go older, he will start either Payton Thorne or Holden Geriner. Thorne started a year ago showing off his legs but couldn't get all that much going through the air. Part of Throne's issues was receiver play, but with a ton of talent coming in, this is no longer an excuse.
Geriner has been playing at Auburn forever and has yet to have a legitimate role quarterbacking the Tigers. If he doesn't see his name one or two on the depth chart, you could potentially see him hit the portal.
The two young guys are Hank Brown and true freshman Walker White. For a while, it seemed pretty clear White was the future, and he still likely is, but Brown seriously has a shot in this race. Brown looked excellent during his short time on the field in the Music City Bowl, and it sounds like that momentum has carried into spring practice.
When talking about having four players in the quarterback battle, Coach Freeze said, "It's the hardest thing that when you have 4 guys that you need to get reps. We're charting every rep."
Coach Freeze went on to say Thorne has done a job taking over as a leader, and the job is his to lose. The expectation is that Thorne will start for Auburn this season, but some have a feeling that the young bucks will give him a run for his money.
