The San Diego State Aztecs and the University of Connecticut Huskies will meet in the National Championship tonight, and it’s safe to say many people didn’t have these two teams pinned as the last two standing. However, they both deserved to reach this point, as portrayed by their 62-14 combined record. The Aztecs’ last loss came on February 28, while the Huskies bowed out by two to Marquette in the Big East tournament, which marked their only loss since February 18.

The Aztecs have to be feeling good after knocking out Florida Atlantic in the Final Four via a buzzer-beater two-point shot from SDSU’s Lamont Butler. FAU controlled the Aztecs for most of the contest, but SDSU hung around and sealed the deal at the buzzer. Tonight’s National Championship marks the first in school history for the Aztecs, so either way, it was an impressive year for the Mountain West champions.

Unlike SDSU, there wasn’t too much excitement in UConn’s Final Four victory. The Huskies completely dispatched the Miami Hurricanes 72-59, and that scoreline makes the game seem like it was closer than it actually was. The Huskies jumped out to an early 9-0 lead and never looked back. At times, Miami cut the lead back down to 10, but UConn quickly extended it back to 15+ and cruised to victory.

That’s been the story of March Madness for the Huskies, as they haven’t played a game in March Madness that finished within single digits. Their average win margin is 20.0 points and carry a 16-0 record against non-conference opposition this season. As good as they’ve looked, the Aztecs match up with the Huskies nicely and could keep this game close.

San Diego State took down three great shooting teams in FAU, Creighton and Alabama to reach the National Championship, and they’ll need a similar defensive effort tonight. Lamont Butler and Matt Bradley should be able to slow the game down, and Nathan Mensah (Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year) can slow down UConn’s Adama Sanogo. However, the Huskies’ depth will be the difference in this game.

The Huskies have nine players that average 13 minutes or more and played in at least 35 games this season. Head coach Dan Hurley can go to big man Donovan Clingan or shooter Joey Calcaterra off the bench, and both players could start for the majority of teams that made the NCAA Tournament. In the end, we think the Aztecs can slow the game down to keep it close, but UConn will prove to be too much.

The Huskies are 13-2 in their last 15 games, and their opponents haven’t scored more than 65 points this tournament. San Diego State gave up 71 points to FAU, but they are giving up just 57.7 points per contest in their previous 10 and 60.0 points per game in March Madness. We don’t see this game finishing with more than 135 points but expect UConn to cut down the nets.
