Former Florida State basketball assistant Andy Enfield is leaving the bright lights of Los Angeles for Dallas, Texas, as he's been named the head coach of SMU. He had been the head coach for USC since 2013 and took the Trojans to the NCAA Tournament five times (probably six if you include the 2019-20 season) and an Elite Eight run in 2021.
Enfield was on the hot seat entering the offseason after a disappointing 2023-24 season where the Trojans finished 15-18 despite a top-3 recruiting class featuring LeBron James's son, Bronny, and the second-ranked player in the class, Isaiah Collier. Where those players end up with the new free transfer rules will be intriguing to watch, if they do decide to leave. Enfield was previously the head coach during Florida Gulf Coast's "Dunk City" run in 2013 where they made a Cinderella run to the Sweet 16.

SMU surprised some people by relieving the duties of their previous coach, Rob Lanier, after just two seasons with the program and a solid year overall, finishing 20-13. The Mustangs won ten more games than their previous season, and even beat Florida State in Tallahassee. With them joining the ACC this summer, the feeling was they wanted to make a splashy hire to aid their transition and this is certainly one way to do it.
Florida State was Enfield's first job as a college assistant coach, where he coached players like Al Thronton and Toney Douglas from 2006-2011. He began his coaching career as a shooting coach with the Milwaukee Bucks in 1994 before becoming an assistant for the Boston Celtics from 1998-2000. He left the Celtics after that to help run TractManager, a healthcare software system
