Florida State Seminoles guard Devin Vassell (24) talks to ESPN after a game

Former FSU Basketball Star Ruled Out for NBA Season By San Antonio Spurs

The former Seminole will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023-24 NBA campaign.

Former Florida State basketball star and current San Antonio Spur Devin Vassell has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a stress reaction in his foot, per Shams Charania of The Athletic. He's dealt with numerous injuries throughout his NBA career thus far, including an arthroscopic surgery on his knee last year, but this is his first foot injury.

Vassell was averaging a career-high 19.5 PPG and 4.1 APG this season while shooting a career-best 47.2% from the floor. He also appeared in 68 games, starting 62 of them. Vassell made sure to back up his big contract extension he received last offseason, as the Spurs view him as a long-term fit with superstar rookie Victor Wembenyama. If they can find a more natural point guard to play alongside these two, they could become a player in the Western Conference within the next few years.

Despite Vassell's improvements, the Spurs weren't that great this season, currently sitting at just 18-57 and in last place in the West. With only 7 games remaining, it's unlikely they'll surpass last year's 22-60 record. It will still be seen as a positive season with Vassell's continued progression and with Wembenyama somehow exceeding his lofty expectations. They'll look to add some talent this offseason to help their climb.

Devin Vassell spent two seasons at Florida State, averaging 12.7 PPG and 5.1 RPG while shooting 49% from the floor and 41.9% from 3 his sophomore 2019-20 season. His productivity and potential as a 3-and-D wing led the Spurs to draft him with the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, where he has spent all four seasons of his career.
