Playing in their First True Away Game, UGA takes on FSU

As the Georgia Bulldogs prepare for their first true road game of the season, here's what to expect in their matchup against the Florida State Seminoles.

Tallahassee, FL – At 9:15 EST, the 3-3 Georgia Bulldogs will play the 4-1 Florida State Seminoles. The Seminoles are currently 2-0 at home while this matchup marks the first true away game for the Dawgs where their opponent has home-court advantage (all other non-home games UGA has had have been tournament settings).

The Dawgs are entering this game after a strong 78-69 win over Winthrop University where they possessed control of the game throughout the entire second half. Meanwhile, the Seminoles are coming off a week-long break and an overtime 77-71 win against CU Boulder. Both teams are currently unranked and have faced no conference opponents.

On the offensive side of the ball for Georgia, a grad student out of Houston, Texas Noah Thomasson is the leading point scorer, averaging 14.3 points a game. Thomasson played well for the Dawgs in their game against Providence a week and a half ago, leading them to Victory last Friday scoring 24 points against Winthrop. His performance is expected to continue into the game tonight despite facing a strong FSU defense.

Defensively for the Dawgs, we saw the same leaders from the season continue their performance against Winthrop. Senior Justin Hill is still the assist leader averaging 2.7 assists per game and grad student Russel Tchewa leads in rebounds with an average of 5.8 rebounds a game. These two upper-class men should be critical for the Dawgs on defense and in shifting the momentum in the Dawgs' favor.

The Seminoles offense has been headed by junior forward Jamir Watkins who averages 14.2 points a game. Watkins has a 52.1% field goal shooting percentage and is 70.8% from the line. This is significantly better than Thomasson’s 55.6% free throw shooting on 18 attempts. This may give Watkins and FSU a competitive edge officially over UGA.

Watkins seems to be the Seminoles’ most versatile player as he also leads the team in assists, 4.4 on average, and rebounds, 6.0 on average. It is imperative for the Dawgs to minimize Watkins’ on the court in order to come out on top.

Tonight marks the Dawgs' fourth face-off against a Power 5 opponent. A win would greatly help them prepare for upcoming conference play and send the Dawgs into their next games, all of which are at home, confidently.
