NFL Draft Best Bet for DL Lukas Van Ness

If there’s one thing Iowa football, and the Big Ten in general, is known for, it’s hard-nosed, defensive football. The Hawkeyes were led by their defense this past season, as they had one of worst offenses in the country. Despite that, they were still in contention to win the West Division to make the Big Ten Championship until the bitter end.

One of the primary reasons for that strong defense was DL Lukas Van Ness. He’s listed at 6-foot-5, 272 pounds, but plays even bigger. He’s the top prospect for the Hawkeyes, so it’s no surprise we’re starting with him for our Iowa NFL Draft predictions. He’s all but a lock to become just the third Iowa DL to get drafted in program history.

With that in mind, we’re also in agreement with where many projections have him being selected, which is at #10 overall to the Philadelphia Eagles. Their offense is stacked at skill positions, so they’re likely going to be focused on the defensive side of the ball. Some have him going as high as #6 to the Detroit Lions, but given the recent suspension of four wide receivers, they may have bigger concerns.

NFL Draft Prediction for LB Jack Campbell

To keep the theme of a tough Hawkeyes defense going, we’re also keying in on LB Jack Campbell. Not to be confused with the NHL goalie, Campbell is a leader on the field and is projected to be selected in the second round. There’s likely to be a wide range in which he could be picked, but the second day of the draft seems to be the way to go.

He has a great relationship with former star LB Luke Kuechly. This has many analysts thinking the Carolina Panthers a good landing spot for him, but they’ll be focused on a QB on day one as they have the #1 overall pick. Regardless, Campbell should do well in today’s NFL, as he has the speed to drop back into coverage. When it comes to the versatile LB, our Iowa NFL Draft predictions are focused on him being a day-two pick.

TE Sam LaPorta: One of the Best 2023 Tight End Prospects

Outside of defense, Iowa fans would argue their punter was their next best position. However, if there’s one offense position that is synonymous with the Hawkeyes, it’s tight end. Therefore, our Iowa NFL Draft predictions wrap up with TE Sam LaPorta.

Whether it’s Dallas Clark, Noah Fant, T.J. Hockenson or George Kittle, there are multiple former-Iowa TEs that most fans would recognize in the NFL as of late. LaPorta looks to be the next of them in a class with a few elite TEs. Most are focused on Dalton Kincaid of Utah and Michael Mayer of Notre Dame, but LaPorta is right in the mix.

Like Campbell, we project he’ll be a selection on day two of the 2023 NFL Draft. At pick #60, the Cincinnati Bengals could be a great landing spot for him with an elite QB in Joe Burrow and a loaded trio of WRs on the outside.
