Multiple Jayhawks earn Big 12 Player of the Week honors
It's been a busy week for the Kansas Athletics department, as multiple Kansas athletes have garnered Big 12 weekly honors.
It started Monday, as Kansas senior center Taiyanna Jackson was named the Big 12 Player of the Week in women's basketball for a week where she recorded her 15th and 16th double-double outings, which lead the Big 12.
Against TCU, she scored 13 points and 10 rebounds in just 26 minutes. And she followed that up with 24 points and 11 rebounds against Texas Tech in 37 minutes.
This is her second Big 12 Player of the Week award of the season, having earned the honor back on January 3rd. She is the first Jayhawk to win the award twice in the same season since Jessica Washington did it 2019. The last Kansas player to do it twice during conference play was Chelsea Gardner back in 2015.
Jackson has been named as a 2023 Lisa Leslie Center of the Year candidate, and is included on the Naismith Women's Defensive Player of the Year Watch List.
Joining Jackson in getting honored this week are two female athletes: one in the first set of weekly awards and one in the final weekly awards of the season.
On Wednesday, senior Rylee Anderson used a Kansas record-breaking performance in the high jump to earn the final Big 12 Women's Athlete of the Week in Indoor Track and Field. Her jump of 1.90 meters (6 feet, 2.75 inches) at the Tyson Invitational broke her own record of 1.88 meters from earlier in the season. She has the top 4 jumps in school history, and this is her third weekly honor of her career.
And finishing up the awards for the week, junior catcher Lyric Moore was named the Big 12 Softball Player of the Week Tuesday after her electric performance in the Candrea Classic in Tuscon, AZ this weekend. She starts the season off with the most home runs in the league with three in five games including her first multi-home run game in her career against Long Beach State. She drove in nine runs with a slugging percentage of 1.133 and OPS of 1.604. All three of those marks rank second in the conference. Moore is the first Jayhawk to earn Player of the Week since Jennifer Marwitz in 2019.
