Calipari optimistic about Ugonna Onyenso making season debut against UNC

One of Kentucky's big men is yet to play this season. Could that change this weekend?

Kentucky will have its work cut out for it when it takes on the No. 9 North Carolina Tar Heels at the CBS Sports Classic at State Farm Arena in Atlanta this weekend.

Head coach John Calipari, however, is optimistic that the Wildcats could have another set of hands helping carry the load.

On Monday night's edition of the John Calipari show, he mentioned that he was optimistic about Ugonna Onyenso being able to make his season debut.

“Ugo will start practicing this week,” Calipari said Monday night. “... Will he play this weekend? I’m hoping he’s able to give us something if we need him.”

Onyenso, a 7-foot center, could provide Kentucky's backcourt with the spark it needs.

Onyenso was Kentucky's third-ranked recruit in its 2022 class behind Cason Wallace and Chris Livingston.

Onyenso was a 4-star recruit with a 0.9875 composite rating according to 247Sports. He was the No. 36 player nationally, the No. 9 center and the No. 1 player in the state of Connecticut.

Last season Onyenso played in 16 games. He averaged 6.9 minutes, 2.5 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
