Louisville Makes Top Eight for Toledo Transfer Dante Maddox Jr.

The former guard for the Rockets was a Second-Team All-MAC selection this past season.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville men's basketball program's efforts to rebuild their roster are well underway, and a wide range of transfers are already showing early interest in the Cardinals.

One such player is former Toledo guard Dante Maddox Jr., who announced his top eight transfer destinations on Monday with Louisville in the running to land his commitment. Creighton, Oklahoma, Xavier, Illinois, Kansas, TCU and Michigan are also in the mix.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound point guard was one of the best players in the MAC this past season. Starting all 32 games for the Rockets, Maddox was their leading scorer at 15.6 points per game, while also averaging 4.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals to earn a Second-Team All-MAC nod. Maddox shot 43.8 percent from the field, 40.2 percent on three-point attempts and 86.2 percent at the free throw line.

The Chicago Heights, Ill. native spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career with Call State Fullerton before joining Toledo ahead of the 2022-23 season. In his first season, with the Rockets, he averaged 11.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game, while shooting 48.8 percent from the field and 45.1 percent on threes.

Not long after the end of Louisville's disastrous 2023-24 campaign, one which resulted in the firing of second-year head coach Kenny Payne, the Cardinals' roster began to flip. As of Apr. 1, ten Louisville players have entered the portal, with only Ty-Laur Johnson and Hercy Miller in line to return.

Fortunately, new head coach Pat Kelsey is already starting to work the portal. So far, Kelsey has landed two transfers since officially being named the new head coach on Mar. 28: guard Reyne Smith and center James Scott, both of whom are following Kelsey from Charleston.
