Report: Oakland Transfer Trey Townsend to Take Official Visit to Louisville

Townsend is the reigning Horizon League Player of the Year.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Add another high-profile transfer visitor to the Louisville men's basketball program's ledger.

Oakland transfer forward Trey Townsend, the 2023-24 Horizon League Player of the Year, is set to take an official visit to the Cardinals on Apr. 20-21, according to On3's Joe Tipton. He will also take a visit to Arizona on Apr. 16-17 and one to Ohio State on Apr. 18-19.

Townsend is one of several transfers in line to visit Louisville over the next several days. Arizona's Oumar Ballo will visit on Tuesday, BYU's Aly Khalifa and Long Beach State's Aboubacar Traore will visit on Thursday, plus Wake Forest's Kevin "Boopie" Miller and Washington's Koren Johnson will join Townsend this upcoming weekend. Five-star 2024 center Jayden Quaintance will also visit on Thursday.

The 6-foot-6, 228-pound forward put together a phenomenal year for Oakland, and was one of the top mid-major players in college basketball this past season. Starting all 36 games, Townsend averaged 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game - all of which led the Golden Grizzlies - while shooting 45.5 percent from the field.

His efforts served as the catalyst for Oakland going 24-12, which included winning the Horizon League Tournament to clinch just their fourth NCAA Tournament berth in program history. He scored 17 points in the Golden Grizzlies' stunning first round upset over Kentucky, and 30 points in their Round of 32 overtime loss to NC State.

The Oxford, Mich. native had previously spent his entire four-year career at Oakland before entering the portal. in 129 games, all of which have been starts, he has totaled 1,813 points, 889 rebounds, 238 assists, 166 steals and 100 blocks.

Not long after the end of Louisville's disastrous 2023-24 campaign, one which resulted in the firing of second-year head coach Kenny Payne, the Cardinals' roster began to flip. In fact, all 12 of Louisville's scholarship players have entered the portal, with only walk-on guard Hercy Miller in line to return.

Fortunately, new head coach Pat Kelsey is already starting to work the portal. So far, Kelsey has landed three players since officially being named the new head coach on Mar. 28: transfer guard Reyne Smith and transfer center James Scott - both of whom are following Kelsey from Charleston - as well as former James Madison star and 2024 Sun Belt Player of the Year Terrence Edwards Jr.
