Report: Louisville Guard Ty-Laur Johnson to Enter Transfer Portal
The sophomore is the 11th player to move on from the Cardinals following the end of their 2023-24 season.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It appears that the Louisville men's basketball program will be getting a clean breakaway from the Kenny Payne era.
True freshman guard Ty-Laur Johnson has "submitted his paperwork in order to enter the transfer portal," according to On3's Joe Tipton.
With Johnson's decision to transfer, barring a decision to withdraw from the portal, Louisville is now left with zero returning scholarship players from the 2023-24 season. The only player in line to return is walk-on guard Hercy Miller. Johnson is one of 11 players to enter the portal following the end of the Cardinals' season.
Playing in 30 games with eight starts, the 6-foot-0, 160-pound guard showed flashes of long term potential. Johnson was easily Louisville's top non-scoring playmaker this season, leading the team in assists and steals with 3.6 and 1.4 per game, respectively.
Despite being inconsistent at times on offense, shooting 37.4 percent from the field and committing the second-most turnovers on the team at 2.3, he still averaged 8.7 points per game on the season.
The Brooklyn, N.Y. native was a consensus four-star prospect by the four major recruiting services coming out of high school, and ranked as high as the No. 1 player in the state of New York and No. 64 overall prospect in the Class of 2023 according to Rivals.
The influx of transfers following the end of Louisville's season is not a surprising development. The Cardinals finished their 2023-24 campaign with an overall record of just 8-24 and 3-17 in ACC play, resulting in the dismissal second-year head coach Kenny Payne on Mar. 13. UofL hired Charleston's Pat Kelsey to replace Payne on Mar. 28.
While the Cardinals' roster has flipped significantly over the last couple weeks, Kelsey is already starting to work the portal. So far, Louisville has landed two transfers since officially being named the new head coach: guard Reyne Smith and center James Scott, both of whom are following Kelsey from the Cougars.
