In-State Spring Football Games: Coincidence or Courtesy?

Miami, Florida, Florida State hosting spring games on consecutive days this week

We will be brief here, but how about the 'big three?'

Miami, Florida and Florida State have often been linked beyond football prowess or even geography to each other as true rivals, especially when it comes to college football recruiting in particular.

It's the main reason why this week's spring game setup for all three programs plays fascinating from a logistical and dare we say -- courteous -- standpoint.

Florida will wrap up spring ball with its Orange and Blue scrimmage on Thursday evening. Miami of course has its showcase set for Friday night at DRV PNK Stadium. Florida State, along with many other programs across the sport, is set for a Saturday Garnet and Gold game.

Whether on purpose and by-design, like most recruiting-led events appear to be in the Southern footprint, or somehow just a rare coincidence -- it's ideal. From almost any standpoint, it comes off well for each of the three programs.

Logistically, the UF and UM games being in the evening on weekdays makes the most sense and FSU has a traditional daytime window for Saturday. Competition-wise, this affords each fan base to have its own day of action within the state, not competing for market share with a rival, while also allowing time to keep an eye on each in-state rival if desired.

Most importantly, though, it allows for recruits to hit each and any of these games without travel conflicts. So many recruits have to settle on just one spring game event to attend each weekend going forward, but not in the state of Florida. Recruit X could conceivably be hosted by each program on consecutive days, should he have the travel means.

While each rival has done a good job hosting recruits all spring long, with major verbal commitments now in for each program as Judd Anderson kicked off Miami's momentum last weekend, the endpoint of spring ball often draws a considerable crowd on its own.

Of course, the trio of Sunshine State programs often overlap on the recruiting trail with a recruit like five-star Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna star Joshisa Trader, who appears to be considering each of the 'Big three.' In theory, the two-way standout could attend each program's spring game and continue the process from there, however unlikely.

Just the possibility of this coincidence, or courtesy, shouldn't hurt either program springing to its true offseason on the field or on the recruiting trail.
