No additional punishment for Ohio State player who speared Snuggerud on bench

Thiesing received a five-minute major and game disqualification in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Gophers

Ohio State forward Cam Thiesing will not see further punishment for spearing Gopher forward Jimmy Snuggerud late in Minnesota's 6-3 win Saturday.

In the final minute of Saturday's game, Thiesing slowly skated towards the Gophers bench during a stoppage in play and then speared Snuggerud with his stick. Snuggerud was on the Minnesota bench at the time.

An official was in front of the bench area at the time of the incident and proceeded to grab Thiesing and take him down to the ground, attempting to break up the situation.

The Ohio State forward was awarded a five minute major which was upgraded to a game disqualification for the spearing. The game disqualification comes with a one-game suspension.

Big Ten officials ruled Monday that Thiesing will not be disciplined further. Thiesing will now miss Ohio State's Friday night game against Penn State.

With Saturday's 6-3 win over the Buckeyes the Gophers extend their win streak to five games and have moved up to No. 9 in USCHO.com's men's hockey rankings. Snuggerud is second in the nation with 18 goals for the 14-6-4 Gophers.

Next up for Minnesota is a weekend series at No. 8 Michigan State.
