Around the SEC: Professional Golfer Brian Harman Credits Kirby Smart Following Open Championship Victory
Professional golfer Brian Harman pulled off an impressive showing at the 2023 Open Championship to pick up his first ever major victory on the PGA Tour.
Harman won The Open by six strokes after Sunday's final round, and he held a sizable lead through the majority of the tournament.
The 36-year-old undoubtedly felt a lot of pressure, and he found comfort from a unique source. Harman played college golf at the University of Georgia, a school that has had plenty of success on the gridiron over the past few seasons. In an interview with the Golf Channel, he shared how a quote from Bulldogs' head coach Kirby Smart helped him stay calm and determined during his last round.
"I kept thinking about something that Kirby Smart said," Harman said. "I'm not going to be hunted, I'm going to hunt."
Harman was referencing a remark that Smart made during SEC Media Days in 2022, and he applied it well. Aside from a couple of blunders through Sunday's first few holes, he never allowed his competition to catch up with him.
Now, Harman can relax and know that he achieved a major feat, while the Georgia Bulldogs enter football season with the goal of winning their third-straight national title.
