Did You Notice?
• Mississippi State announced that Jim Ashmore, its first basketball player to top 1,000 career points, passed away earlier this week. He was 88 years old. He was a three-time All-SEC selection in 1954-55, 1955-56 and 1956-57. He is one of two players in State history to average over 20 points per game (Bailey Howell the other), and his 1,918 points are still fourth on the program's all-time list.
• ESPN reported that New Mexico State defensive backs coach Cliff Odom is headed to Mississippi State as special teams coordinator. The move will complete Jeff Lebby's initial coaching staff. He's the son of 13-year NFL veteran Cliff Odom, Sr., who played linebacker for the Cleveland Browns, Baltimore and Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins.
• The men's basketball team will play for the fifth time ever in Tupelo, when it tips off against North Texas on Sunday afternoon.
• The women's basketball team will face Memphis for the 31st time, and first since 2008 (81-49 at Humphrey Coliseum). It'll be the first meeting inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse since MSU won 92-57 on Dec. 2, 2007.
