Another Bulldog Minute: Josh Hubbard has been 'Nothing but Fantastic'

Freshman is already starting to shape into the player that Mississippi State desperately seeks.

Mississippi State (5-0) defeated Northwestern (4-1) in a tight contest for the two rising teams. Head Coach Chris Jans might have found his shot creator in Freshman Josh Hubbard who scored a career-high 29 points against the Wildcats.

Northwestern started the game strong in a similar fashion to their win against Rhode Island leading 15-2 at one point. MSU also assisted them in scoring with timely turnovers, however, the Bulldogs battled back after their rocky start with the help of Josh Hubbard.

He took the game over and as it was said by ESPN commentator Derrick Jones, “Josh Hubbard scores as he breathes.” Hubbard has been nothing but fantastic for State. He has been coming off the bench for these five games, but he is starting to work his way into the starting lineup. Any time he is on the hardwood, he is an offensive weapon.

Hubbard has always been on the smaller side but his confidence in his game does not waver. His ability to get to the rim and finish is something to watch. He can finish over anyway with his speed and crafty layup ability and his shooting from the 3-point line is a welcome sight. When both sides of his game are flowing, he is hard to stop.

The key piece missing from MSU last season was a consistent scorer outside of Tolu Smith. Hubbard’s shot-creating ability will elevate MSU on the offensive end to match their intensity on the defensive side of the ball.

With Hubbard becoming more comfortable as games progress, he will become a scoring force and the possible pick-and-poll play with a returning Smith will be fun to watch.
