Former Oklahoma WR Gavin Freeman Announces Transfer to In-State Rival

On Sunday morning, former Sooners wide receiver Gavin Freeman announced that he is heading to Stillwater.

On Sunday, former Oklahoma wide receiver Gavin Freeman announced that he will transfer to Oklahoma State.

Freeman entered the transfer portal on Tuesday night after spending two seasons with the Sooners. Starting his career at OU as a walk-on, Freeman was placed on scholarship prior to his sophomore year and served as the team's primary punt returner in 2023.

Freeman played a total of 208 offensive snaps during his two seasons in Norman, with over 140 coming in 2023. After recording three catches for 46 yards and seven carries for 71 yards and a touchdown as a true freshman, Freeman earned a bigger offensive role as a sophomore.

Last year, the former 3-star recruit caught 19 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown to go along with five carries for 20 yards. Freeman also fielded 18 punts for 122 yards and one touchdown in 2023.

After catching a touchdown and returning a punt 82 yards for a score in the same quarter against Arkansas State, Freeman didn't see the endzone for the rest of the season. Still, with good speed and elusiveness, the 5-foot-8 wideout should be a solid addition to the Cowboys offense.

The first play of Freeman's collegiate career was an electrifying touchdown run in the Sooners' 2022 season opener against UTEP that saw the local product take a handoff 46 yards for a touchdown, breaking multiple tackles along the way.

Freeman is the son of former Oklahoma tight Jason Freeman and chose to walk-on at Oklahoma over scholarship offers from other Division I schools. Hailing from Oklahoma City, Freeman played at Heritage Hall (OK), where his father serves as an assistant coach.

Freeman is not the first football player to transfer between the Bedlam rivals, as former Oklahoma State edge rusher Trace Ford left Stillwater to play for Brent Venables and company in Norman prior to the 2023 season.

Former OSU softball pitcher Kelly Maxwell and basketball player Lexy Keys also transferred from Oklahoma State to OU prior to their 2023-24 campaigns.
