OSU Basketball: Freshman Forward Enters Transfer Portal

Justin McBride is the latest Cowboy to move on from the program.

Another Cowboy is in the transfer portal.

Oklahoma State forward Justin McBride entered the transfer portal on Monday after one season in Stillwater, according to a report by ESPN’s Jeff Borzello. McBride, a four-star prospect out of high school, played limited minutes while he was in Stillwater.

McBride is one of many Cowboys who have entered the transfer portal after the team fired Mike Boynton in March. After the Cowboys’ 12-20 season, they spent nearly three weeks searching for the next coach before hiring Western Kentucky’s Steve Lutz.

At his introductory press conference, Lutz mentioned that he had talked with every player in the gym that day, including McBride. Lutz used McBride as an example of someone he had a productive and honest conversation with about his potential role next season.

In the weeks since, it appears McBride has taken what he learned in those conversations and used it to make a decision about his future. Last season under Boynton, McBride saw the court sparingly, especially in Big 12 play.

In his freshman season, McBride played in 24 games, averaging 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 6.4 minutes per game. Albeit a small sample size, McBride was an efficient finisher, shooting 70.4% from 2-point range. He scored a season-high eight points in the team’s second game against Sam Houston.

At 6-foot-8, 230 pounds, McBride’s size makes him an intriguing transfer. He was also the Big 12’s youngest active player last season. In 2022, McBride signed with OSU as the Cowboys beat Arizona State and Missouri. McBride had various other power conference offers, including TCU, Kansas and Arkansas.

As another domino to fall for the Cowboys this offseason, McBride's departure could open opportunities for him and Lutz as they look to make an impact on new teams next season.
