Bowl Projections: What Bowl Makes Sense For Oklahoma State?
In a week's time, the Oklahoma State Cowboys saw what could have potentially been -- though it would have been a long shot -- some New Year's 6 bowl hopes. Following the 45-3 loss to UCF, Oklahoma State no longer controls its conference championship destiny and it's important for them to just win out.
Heading into their final two matchups -- two that they should win -- the Cowboys have a strong chance of finishing the season at 9-3 and 5-2 in conference play. Where would this land them bowl game-wise?
Action Network's Brett McMurphy projects them to be playing the Auburn Tigers in the Texas Bowl.
In 2019, No. 25 Oklahoma State played in this bowl, taking on the Texas A&M Aggies, losing 24-21. In this hypothetical, the Cowboys get a shot at redemption in this poll in a season where they will likely end up ranked somewhere near No. 25, assuming they can win out.
This season has been a rollercoaster for Oklahoma State. The rotating quarterback era came to an end after a brutal loss to South Alabama. Then things turned around after a loss to Iowa State.
After riding the five-game winning streak, all came crashing down when UCF stomped Oklahoma State out of Florida.
Now, it's up to Oklahoma State to take care of business in their final two games against Houston and BYU, which are, as mentioned, two games the Cowboys should be able to win.
No matter how this season finished, the Cowboys have laid the framework to compete in the Big 12, which will have a fresh look, next season. Assuming Ollie Gordon returns and the Cowboys' staff doesn't change too, too much scheme-wise, they'll be in a good shot to be one of the better teams in the conference and the new 12-team playoff format would favor that.
Thus, making a good bowl game and taking home a win would only help the Cowboys take even more momentum into next season.
