Five Key Plays in Oklahoma State's Win at West Virginia
Oklahoma State extended its winning streak to three, and a handful of plays were vital to the win.
OSU beat West Virginia 48-34 on Saturday to move within a game of bowl eligibility. Ollie Gordon stole the show but was not the only Cowboy who made major impact plays against the Mountaineers.
Five key plays from OSU’s win in Morgantown:
Korie Black’s Interception
The first few minutes of the game were filled with action. A couple of turnovers had already happened, and OSU led 3-0 as WVU tried to get its first scoring drive.
After three straight CJ Donaldson runs, Garrett Greene threw a pass toward the right sideline, and Korie Black picked it off. Black returned it inside the WVU 40-yard line to set up OSU’s first touchdown of the afternoon.
Greene to Carter
Toward the end of the first half, WVU was trying to get some more points on the board. The Mountaineers had just crossed midfield as Greene threw a deep pass on third-and-9.
Devin Carter got behind the OSU secondary and caught the ball at the goal line to give WVU its first lead of the day. OSU missed a field goal going into halftime as WVU held a 17-13 advantage.
A Game-Changing Punt
With OSU trailing 24-20 early in the fourth quarter and facing a fourth down, it had to punt. OSU’s Kale Smith pushed a WVU player into his return man, Preston Fox. The ball ricocheted off the WVU players and into the hands of OSU’s Parker Robertson to get the ball back.
“I was just sitting there anticipating the muff as the coaches always tell us to do,” Robertson said. “And Kale made a great play and threw his defender into the returner, and the ball just popped right in my hands. So, right place, right time.”
Kendal Daniels With a Stop
Facing a fourth-and-2 with less than five minutes remaining, the Mountaineers kept the offense on the field. Greene got the snap and kept the ball going to his left.
After getting past one Cowboy defender, Kendal Daniels chased Greene down and wrapped him up in the backfield. The Mountaineers took a loss of four and handed the ball back to the Cowboys.
Ollie Gordon Puts the Game Away… Twice
Immediately after the play by Daniels to get OSU the ball back, Gordon wasted no time adding to the seven-point lead. On the first play of the next drive, Gordon took the handoff and headed left behind the offensive line and into the clear. Gordon took it 46 yards to the house and extended OSU’s lead to 14.
But he was not done.
After the Mountaineers scored quickly on the next drive, OSU recovered an onside kick and would try to run out the clock. Gordon went for 8 yards on the first carry, then burst free again on the second try.
This time, Gordon made a couple of defenders miss at the line of scrimmage and darted downfield. Gordon went 53 yards for his fourth touchdown and put the game away for good to move the Cowboys to 5-2.
