Game Preview: Oklahoma State vs. Iowa State
Sure, maybe Oklahoma State hasn't had the most desirable start to the season. But the real thing starts now. Big 12 play is here and the Cowboys open up with Iowa State.
Looking at Iowa State's season, they're not too far off of Oklahoma State's level. They're 1-2 on the season and coming off a loss to Ohio. They're in as bad or worse of a position as Oklahoma State.
When playing a light opponent to start the season, though, Iowa State did much better, defeating Northern Iowa 30-9.
Just last year, Oklahoma State defeated Iowa State 20-14 and they lead the all-time series 34-20 with three ties.
With both teams figuring things out, a win would be huge for both programs. The two are interchangeable in Big 12 rankings both being outside of the top ten. Neither team is in a good spot right now, but winning a slugfest doesn't say much for either program, and it would need to be a good win.
Both teams are coming off struggles, but they're the same struggles that have been consistent all season. The offense for both sides has been bad, as Iowa State has five offensive touchdowns through three games and the Cowboys have seven offensive touchdowns through their three games. The Cyclones have thrown three interceptions to the Cowboys two interceptions.
Defensively, the Cyclones are going to cause problems. They allow just 253.7 yards per game, with only 143.7 yards coming through the air. The Cowboys will have to be able to pound the rock to give themselves the best chance to thrive offensively. With the rotating quarterbacks, getting the passing game going isn't likely and the Cowboys will have to divert to short passes and getting playmakers the ball.
While the Cowboys' defense has let up 354.3 yards per game, there have been signs of life, specifically in Week 2 in the second half against Arizona State, where they pitched a second-half shutout.
Oklahoma State will have to put things together on both sides of the ball, simplifying the offense and getting playmakers the ball while letting the defense get off the field and have time between different series.
