Initial Thoughts: Oklahoma State Downs Cincinnati Bearcats 45-13
The Oklahoma State Cowboys took down the Cincinnati Bearcats...
- Ollie Gordon. This has been a thought after each of the last five games. He's crossed the century mark in rushing yards in each of the last five games. It's expected at this point.
This was easily the best front seven the Cowboys have seen this season. In the first half, the Bearcats were all over Gordon, even forcing a fumble on him in the red zone. He responded, though. As the Cowboys began to extend their lead, Gordon was at the center of it.
He finished with 271 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns while receiving 25 carries. This was good for an average of 10.8 yards per carry. What he's doing on a weekly basis is incredible. He put up video game numbers once again.
Want to try to quantify how good this two-game stretch has been for Gordon? He joins Andre Williams as the only two FBS running backs to have two straight 250-plus scrimmage yards in the past 20 seasons (stat courtesy of ESPN's Chris Low).
There's only one way to put this: Ollie Gordon is a star.
- Leon Johnson's breakout game. Oklahoma State's receiving corps was depleted and needed some life. Johnson provided just that. He had an impressive first half, reeling in three catches for 83 yards.
The 6-foot-5 wide receiver is a transfer from Division III football. His emergence was incredible to watch, and seeing what role he has moving forward will be quite entertaining.
- Bowl eligible. Despite a 2-2 start to the season, the Cowboys have battled their way through the last four games, winning all four. Now 6-2 on the season, the Cowboys will be bowling to end the season.
- Ranked Pokes? This was a question last week, too, but seems even more reasonable this week. Not only did the Cowboys win their fourth game in a row, but they did it in dominating fashion.
The Cowboys have been in the bubble of being ranked in the past two weeks, and they have two shots at being ranked this week. The AP Top 25 releases on Sunday whereas the College Football Playoff rankings come out on Tuesday.
With another win and doing so in such an exhilarating performance, the Cowboys could certainly find their way onto one of these lists.
- Bring on Bedlam. The Cowboys have been playing confident football, and that showed on Saturday night as they dominated the Bearcats. On the flip side, the Oklahoma Sooners have been inconsistent this season, with plenty of ups and downs.
While the Sooners are arguably the better team, the Cowboys bring more momentum into this one. The Cowboys have also improved on a weekly basis, which isn't something that can particularly be said for the Sooners.
We're in for a fun one next Saturday. The game will be at 2:30 p.m. CT and broadcast on ABC.
