A 10th Win Would Be a Perfect End for Oklahoma State's 2023 Season

The Cowboys have navigated their way to nine wins, but getting another would symbolize how far the program has come.

Oklahoma State’s season has been anything but smooth, yet a 10-win season is well within reach.

Sitting at 9-4 after a blowout loss to Texas in the Big 12 Championship, OSU still has an opportunity to win its 10th game against Texas A&M in the Texas Bowl.

An OSU win in Houston would be good for the team’s second 10-win season in three seasons. While the 2023 is not on the same level as the College Football Playoff-contending 2021 squad, this season has led to many memorable moments.

After beginning 2-2, getting to 10 wins looked nearly impossible. That is until Ollie Gordon II became the star of the Cowboys’ offense. With six consecutive 100-yard rushing games, Gordon led the Cowboys on a five-game winning streak.

In that stretch, OSU sprinted to a 7-2 record to secure its 18th bowl appearance in a row under coach Mike Gundy. The Cowboys’ streak started with a Friday night blackout game against Kansas State.

Jumping out to a big early lead, the Cowboys narrowly held on to avoid the first 2-3 start since Gundy took over. Wins against Kansas, West Virginia and Cincinnati soon followed.

However, the Cowboys’ most meaningful win of the season extended their winning streak to five in early November. In the final scheduled Bedlam game, OSU pulled an upset against Oklahoma to end the Sooners’ College Football Playoff hopes.

After the rivalry win, OSU fans rushed the field and took the goalposts on a tour of Stillwater before being dumped in Theta Pond. Those good vibes did not last much longer, as OSU got blown out in a rainstorm at UCF.

Still, OSU rebounded at Houston and made a wild comeback against BYU to end the regular season and earn a trip to Arlington. While that game did not end well, OSU has an opportunity to win a neutral-site game in Houston on Wednesday.

Winning the game would propel this Cowboys team to 10-4. One more bounceback would cap off a historic season where Gundy has applauded his team’s resilience and effort.

2023 could be the eighth 10-win season since Gundy’s head coaching tenure began in 2005. While it will not be easy to beat an SEC team and move Gundy’s bowl record to 12-6, if any team is capable of playing inspired football in late December, it’s this year’s OSU squad.
