Oklahoma State Has 'No Idea' What to Expect From Texas A&M in Bowl Game
The Oklahoma State Cowboys -- after going 9-4 and losing to Texas in the Big 12 title game -- drew the Texas A&M Aggies in the Texas Bowl to finish off their season. The two programs are in two very different situations as they play on Dec. 27.
While the Cowboys hope to retain Ollie Gordon, they're setting up to finish their season strong as they enter a new era of the Big 12, looking to consistently be one of the top dogs in the program.
For the Aggies, they're under a transition period as a program. Jimbo Fisher was fired during the season after years of mediocrity with the program -- despite a great 2020 season that saw him receive a contract extension. His program was a perennial bowl program up until the 2022 season, too.
With his firing, the Aggies now enter a transition period. With a head coach's firing, the program has seen 16 different players hit the transfer portal and will be under the coaching of interim head coach Elijah Robinson.
The Aggies hired Mike Elko from Duke, but Robinson will finish out the bowl game as the interim head coach, as he then will take over as Syracuse's defensive coordinator.
With all of this surrounding the program, the Aggies are certainly a hard team to predict or prepare for ahead of the Texas Bowl, and Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy understands that.
“We have no idea what they’re gonna do,” Gundy said on Thursday. “We don’t have any idea what they’re gonna do. They play three down, they play four down. They play man, they play zone. The coordinator’s not there on either side of the ball."
Again, this bowl game could provide a huge opportunity for the Cowboys, who are both in the hunt for a double-digit win season along with potentially retaining Doak Walker Award winner Ollie Gordon, who would be a huge returnee for the program.
“So, we don’t have any idea what they’re doing. We’re practicing for spring ball and putting a little gameplan together and gonna go down and play," Gundy continued.
Playing a loose game plan and just playing football will provide for an interesting viewing experience, as neither team will completely resemble the ones that rolled out during the regular season.
