Oklahoma State Hopes to Get Offensive Weapon More Involved
Oklahoma State’s offense has struggled to find consistency, but getting the ball to playmakers could help that issue.
It looked like early in the Iowa State game, getting Ollie Gordon the ball was a point of emphasis. His performance in OSU’s first conference game helped spark the offense, at least for stretches.
But after the loss to the Cyclones, coach Mike Gundy wants to see that emphasis shift toward Brennan Presley.
“We need to get him the ball more, he needs to be involved more,” Gundy said.
Presley accounted for only nine yards, a season-low, against the Cyclones. The wide receiver also only touched the ball twice offensively and never got an opportunity to make something happen in the return game.
With nine total yards, Presley had his worst outing since his freshman season in 2020. In 2022, Presley was a vital part of the Cowboys’ passing game and looked to be a player who could help the turbulent quarterback rotation going into this season.
Last season, Presley had 67 receptions for 813 yards. He fell short of 55 receiving yards just four times in the 2022 season. Through four games in 2023, his season-high is 54.
Getting Presley the ball more would add a layer to the offense that is yet to be seen this season. And although the solution seems simple, executing that plan may be challenging.
“When you play outside of the box, it’s more difficult to say we’re gonna get this player so many touches compared to a running back,” Gundy said. “It’s a little different. But I have mentioned to them that he needs more touches.”
Still, Presley has shown his importance throughout the early season. It took him only two games to match his 2022 receiving touchdown total with two.
That illustrates just how impactful he could be with the ball. For an offense that has problems getting downfield and scoring, getting more touches to a weapon with a knack for reaching the endzone is crucial.
But as Presley waits his turn to get more offensive involvement, his off-the-field attitude has been a bright spot.
“We always get good things from Presley,” Gundy said. “Again, he’s not real vocal, but we get good leadership from him.”
