Five Key Plays From Oklahoma State's Upset in Bedlam
Oklahoma State came out on top in the final installment of Bedlam for the foreseeable future, and a few key moments made it happen.
OSU beat Oklahoma 27-24 on Saturday to win its second straight meeting between the two in Stillwater. The close, intense matchup gave the rivalry a proper sendoff.
Five key plays from OSU’s Bedlam win:
The first bad snap
Following a 49-yard gain by Nic Anderson, the Sooners were well on their way to breaking a first-quarter tie. But immediately after getting into Cowboys’ territory, the Sooners fumbled their opportunity away.
The first-down snap went into the hands of running back Jovantae Barnes, who inexplicably tried to hand the ball to Dillon Gabriel. Neither player had control of the ball as it eventually fell to the ground and OSU’s Xavier Benson recovered.
OSU would take advantage of the takeaway and score a touchdown on the ensuing possession.
Ollie Gordon’s Interception
With the Cowboys trailing by four near the end of the third quarter, they quickly progressed downfield. In four plays, the Cowboys went for 42 yards to set up a play at the Sooners’ 28-yard line to begin the fourth quarter.
OSU’s attempted trick play went nowhere as Ollie Gordon looked to pass back to Alan Bowman, but OU had him covered. Gordon tried to finish the play himself and threw deep to Rashod Owens and was picked off by Billy Bowman Jr., who returned it back to the OU 44.
Penalties kickstart OSU’s drive
Backed up deep in OU territory and facing a third down, Bowman threw a deep ball to Owens along the sideline, and Makari Vickers was called for pass interference. OU coach Brent Venables expressed his disagreement with the call and drew another 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
The Cowboys, now at the OU 38, used passes to Owen and Brennan Presley to get into the red zone before Gordon ran in the go-ahead touchdown with eight minutes left. Without the penalties, the Cowboys would have been forced to punt from the Sooners’ 8-yard line and may not have gotten another opportunity to take the lead.
Another bad snap
On the Sooners’ first play after losing the lead, they turned it over. A low snap hit Gabriel in the knee and bounced the football directly at the Cowboys’ defensive line.
Kody Walterscheid fell on the ball immediately for OSU to set up the offense in the red zone. OSU could not fully capitalize on the field position but still put up a field goal that would end up being the difference on the scoreboard.
Stoops goes short
Still trailing by three in the final minutes, OU faced a fourth-and-5 on its 46-yard line. Gabriel rolled out and threw a pass toward Drake Stoops on the left sideline.
After initially bobbling the ball, Stoops came up with the catch but was two yards short of the line to gain. Left with only one timeout, OU had no choice but to watch Bowman take a couple of knees to run out the clock and make OSU’s upset official.
