Oklahoma State Falls to No. 23 in the College Football Playoff Rankings
Oklahoma State’s latest loss has nearly cost it a spot in the top 25.
In Tuesday’s College Football Playoff rankings, OSU fell to No. 23. It can thank its 45-3 loss to UCF for dropping eight spots after its No. 15 ranking last week.
The Cowboys saw similar results to their new rankings in the Coaches and AP polls. They fell eight spots to No. 25 in the Coaches poll and nine in the AP poll to No. 24.
OSU joins Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas State and Kansas as the five Big 12 teams ranked by the committee this week. Texas remains the highest-ranked Big 12 team at No. 7 and is the favorite to win the conference.
Prior to the loss to UCF, OSU had won five straight games and surged into Big 12 title contention. While OSU still has a strong chance of making the championship game, it no longer controls its destiny.
Still, OSU needs to control what it can. Upcoming games against Houston and BYU offer OSU an opportunity to rehabilitate its image and head to its second conference title game in three seasons.
Considering the Cowboys’ current ranking and overall body of work, winning the Big 12 is likely their only chance at a New Year’s Six bowl game. Despite the negativity surrounding a 42-point loss, the Cowboys have now been in the CFP rankings for three straight weeks and should be the rest of the season as long as they take care of business.
