Ollie Gordon Earns National Awards for His Recent Play
Ollie Gordon’s play has consistently improved, and he continues gaining national recognition for it.
On Monday, Gordon received a couple of awards for the second week in a row. Following his game-changing performance at West Virginia, Gordon won the Doak Walker Award’s National Player of the Week and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week.
Winning just one of those awards in one week would have been impressive, but Gordon taking both in back-to-back weeks is a testament to his impact on the Cowboys’s season. Gordon has had two great games, but most importantly, his play has led the Cowboys to wins.
Oklahoma State got its third straight victory as a direct result of Gordon’s 282-yard outing in Morgantown. Gordon helped OSU do much of its damage in the 28-point fourth quarter, scoring three of his four touchdowns in that final frame.
While Gordon’s performance through three quarters was impressive, the Cowboys’ running back sealed his awards in the final few minutes.
With under five minutes left, the Cowboys looked to take some time off the clock, but Gordon went for a touchdown on the first play of the drive instead. OSU took a 14-point lead with his 46-yard run.
Then, the Cowboys got the ball back a couple of minutes later. Gordon scored again, this time a 53-yard score, giving him 107 yards and two touchdowns on just three carries in the last five minutes.
With 29 carries on Saturday, Gordon accounted for more than half of OSU’s total yardage. His play has continued to improve each week, and with a homecoming matchup with Cincinnati this weekend, Gordon will look to keep that going.
Making it three weeks in a row to win these awards is unlikely, but considering Gordon’s recent run, his chances of doing so are far from zero.
