What Are Mike Gundy’s Thoughts on Oklahoma Ahead of Bedlam?
It’s Bedlam week in Stillwater as the Oklahoma State Cowboys take on the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday.
The Sooners come in with one of the best offenses in the country. They are ranked seventh in the nation in total offense, including fourth in scoring offense, averaging 41 points per game.
Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy said OSU knows what it needs to do on defense, and he knows what to expect from OU offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby.
“It’ll be important in this game as always; we have to play physical up front,” Gundy said. “They still want to rush the football. The history of the coordinator, his background, his pedigree and what he believes in is rush the football.
“Then, they believe in the width of the field, flipping the ball out to the flat and controlling the perimeter.”
Quarterback Dillion Gabriel leads the charge on offense for the Sooners, but he struggled against Kansas.
Gabriel had zero touchdowns and one interception against the Jayhawks. Despite Gabriel struggling, Gundy understands how dangerous the senior can be.
“He lives in their world. They love getting the ball out here, play action pass effectively and long deep over routes,” Gundy said. “He runs better than you think he does.
“Is he going to take off like the guy from Kansas State or Kansas and blindly take off for 80 yards, haven't seen that. But he is an effective runner.”
This will be the last Bedlam for the foreseeable future as OU will be moving to the Southeastern Conference in 2024. Gundy thinks they will play again, but it won’t be in the regular season as a nonconference opponent.
“We will eventually play them again. I think it’ll be in a bowl,” Gundy said. “SEC and Big 12 have a lot of bowl matchups, and I think that will probably be the next time. Regular season in my opinion is history.”
Kickoff for Bedlam is at 2:30 p.m. The game can be seen on ABC
