Pitt Has Widest Range for Potential ACC Tournament Seed

The Pitt Panthers can finish as high as first and as low as fifth.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers had a chance to lock up at least a share of first place in the ACC and a double bye in the coming conference tournament. All it would have took was a win over 14th place Notre Dame but the Iris sent long-time head coach Mike Brey out with a 88-81 win in their final home game.

After being denied the luxury of a mostly stress-free weekend matchup at Miami, Pitt will now have to battle for seeding in the 2023 ACC Tournament. The top overall seed is still in play but the Panthers can also fall as far as the fifth seed, according to Patrick Stevens of the Washington Post.

Stevens reports that Pitt has the widest range of possible outcomes of any ACC team. Unless they win, the Panthers will have to rely on outside help from Virginia, Duke and Clemson, who play Louisville, North Carolina and Notre Dame, respectively, this weekend.

The Panthers can earn the No. 1 seed by simply beating the Hurricanes this weekend. They'd be the No. 2 seed if they lose the regular season finale, Virginia loses and one of either Duke or Clemson loses this weekend as well.

Pitt will earn the No. 3 seed if they lose to Miami, Virginia wins and both Duke and Clemson both lose. Dropping to the No. 4 seed would require the Panthers to lose, Virginia to win and Duke and Clemson to split their games (if one wins, the other must lose). If both the Tigers and Blue Devils win, Pitt will need Virginia to lose in order to hold on to a top-four seed and the double-bye.

If all three of Virginia, Clemson and Duke win and Pitt loses, the Panthers will drop out of the top four and take the No. 5 seed.
