Former Mustang Bryson DeChambeau Finishes Masters in Sixth Place
DeChambeau shoots 1-over in final round Sunday
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Former SMU golfer Bryson DeChambeau finished in a tie for sixth place at this year’s Masters Tournament.
SMU’s first-ever NCAA individual champion led the field after the first round of play Thursday with a 7-under 65. But DeChambeau wouldn’t be nearly as successful for the final three rounds of play.
DeChambeau shot over par in every round of play after his first. He shot a 73 on Friday, a 75 on Saturday and a 73 on Sunday.
The former Mustang made headlines Friday when he picked up a multidirectional marker near the 13th hole at Augusta National. DeChambeau had hit his drive shot on the 13th hole into the pine trees along the right side of the fairway. But, instead of taking the traditional of punching back onto the fairway, DeChambeau decided to send his second shot up the adjacent 14th fairway.
“Yeah, I picked up the signpost,” DeChambeau said, chuckling. “I was trying to direct people. Trying to get people to go to the restrooms or ... I don’t know.”
His actions caused plenty of people to question if the actions broke the rules, but Dechambeau was not charged with a penalty resulting from the action.
Things got worse for DeChambeau on his second shot at came to a rest behind a grandstand. He was granted a free drop for relief then put his third shot within 14 feet of the hole and drained the putt for a birdie.
