REACTION: Gamecocks Fortify Offensive Line with OT Jaxon Hughes

South Carolina's Football program landing transfer OT Jaxon Hughes from Charlotte is a big move for an offensive line unit needing assistance.

The Gamecocks have been searching for offensive line help all season, with the departures of Dylan Wonnum, Jovaughyn Gwyn, and Eric Douglas leaving the offensive line unit largely unproven. The Gamecocks have already landed transfer linemen Sidney Fugar and Nick Gargulio earlier in the offseason and added another piece a few days ago.

Former Charlotte OT Jaxon Hughes committed to South Carolina this past Wednesday, which marks a big move for a program desperate for offensive line help. Hughes started 11 games for the 49ers during the 2022 season and is a versatile piece now at the Gamecocks' disposal.

Coming out of high school, Hughes was originally a defensive end. However, he was quickly moved to the offensive line once he arrived at Charlotte. With the 49ers, Hughes has started multiple games at both right and left tackle. His experience at both positions makes him incredibly useful to the Gamecocks, considering how much the left tackle position is undecided.

Hughes joins the Gamecocks as just a preferred walk-on, but many anticipate his role will be much more significant than that. The Gamecocks will be offering opportunities to compete for a spot to many offensive linemen on the roster, and there's no reason to expect the 6-5 lineman won't be included. With much of the prospective offensive line being either younger guys or players with little starting experience, Hughes could be extremely helpful to those trying to learn how to play the position.

For the most part, the Gamecocks have enjoyed good health amongst the roster this off-season. One of the few blows the team has suffered this season was left tackle Jaylen Nichol's injury in the Spring game. Nichols was expected to be the starting LT for South Carolina this off-season, and his injury had left the coaching staff with a serious predicament. Considering Hughes's significant experience at LT, a position battle between him and Jakai Moore could occur this Summer.
