Aggies OL Josh Bankhead Medically Retires From Football

Josh Bankhead has elected to hang up the cleats for good.

Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said the Aggies would be aggressive in addressing needs in the transfer portal. Adding depth on the offensive line could now become a priority.

Redshirt sophomore offensive lineman Josh Bankhead announced via social media Friday that he would medically retire from football due to health issues. Bankhead was expected to be a priority depth piece on the offensive line in 2023 and both guard positions.

"After 3 concussions and several back injuries I have decided to medically retire from the game of football,” Bankhead wrote. “This is easily the most heartbreaking decision I have ever made and of course, I am going to miss it. All of it. At the end of the day I have to trust that God has a plan for me and I need to continue to have faith in that."

A former three-star recruit from The Woodlands College Park (Texas), Bankhead began the spring working with the second-team offense. He redshirted in 2020 and played 23 total plays in 2021 and 2022.

Bankhead played under former Texas A&M tight end/offensive lineman Lonnie Madison. The son of Aggie alums, Bankhead committed to the Aggies after picking up an offer after he visited Fisher for the 2018 spring game.

The Aggies have seen their roster undergo substantial changes since their 5-7 finish in 2022. Over two dozen players have left via the portal while several more have either graduated or retired.

A&M picked up the commitment of Jackson State linebacker Jurriente Davis Thursday following his lone season with the Tigers. The Aggies also added defensive backs Josh DeBerry (Boston College), Tony Grimes (North Carolina), and Sam McCall (Florida State).

The Aggies open the regular season at Kyle Field on Sept. 2 against New Mexico.
