Aggies Golfer Daniel Rodrigues Advances at Amateur Championship
The Texas A&M men's golf program has produced some significant talent. From Cameron Champ to Jeff Maggert to Billy Martindale to Ryan Palmer, A&M isn't new to championship golfers.
One current star on the rise is senior Daniel Rodrigues, who is currently competing in the Amateur Championship at Hillside Golf Club in Southport, UK.
Rodrigues advanced to the match play round of 32 with a 3&2 victory over Sweden's Simon Hovdal. Rodrigues will now move on to face England's James Claridge on Thursday to compete for a spot in the afternoon round of 16. He tees off at 2:51 a.m. CT.
Hosted by The R&A since 1885, the Amateur Championship is one of the most prestigious championships in the world. The distinguished list of winners includes Bobby Jones, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia.
Rodrigues' teammate, Jaime Montojo also played on Wednesday, losing to Norway's Gregory Lim Solhaug on the 19th hole.
After posting a pair of solid rounds in stroke play, Montojo and Rodrigues advanced to match play. The pair tied eight other golfers for 31st by posting a 4-under score of 139 at the par-72 Hillside Golf Club and par-71 Southport & Ainsdale.
Quarterfinal and semifinal action is slated for Friday and the 36-hole championship match is set for Saturday with all remaining action at Hillside. The winner of the Amateur Championship receives invitations to next month's Open Championship and next year's Masters Tournament and U.S. Open.
