Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles vs. Tennessee Volunteers Super Regional Predictions

Heading into Saturday’s matchup, perhaps the most important development for the Golden Eagles was receiving the hosting bid for their Super Regional matchup against Tennessee.

While Tennessee has been one of the better teams in the country this season – as evidenced by their 41-19 overall record – they have struggled mightily on the road. In their 17 road games this season, the Vols went just 5-12. For a team so far above .500, recording 12 of their 19 losses on the road is a startling statistic.

Adding to this advantage is Southern Miss’ excellence at home so far. Through 31 home games, the Golden Eagles have gone 26-5. While it is expected for college baseball teams to be better at home than on the road, their near-spotless record at the friendly confines of Pete Taylor Park will bode well for their chances of advancing to Omaha for the second consecutive season.

The Volunteers are riding a bit of momentum into the matchup, though, which may play against Southern Mississippi’s Omaha hopes. To advance to this Super Regional matchup, Tennessee had to first defeat the talented Clemson Tigers, something they managed to do in dramatic fashion in a 14-inning thriller.

If Tennessee can use this momentum to their advantage, they can let their starting pitching lead them to another Omaha appearance.

Tennessee’s starting pitching has been perhaps the single biggest reason for their success this season. Led by Chase Dollander (78 IP, 4.50 ERA, 111/27 K/BB), Drew Beam (72.2 IP, 4.09 ERA, 72/20 K/BB) and Zander Sechrist (30.2 IP, 2.05 ERA, 32/5 K/BB), the Vols’ starting pitching staff has given them a chance of victory in each game.

Even with their struggles on the road, having three high-level hurlers heading your rotation gives Tennessee an excellent chance of advancing to Omaha, particularly in a three-game series.

However, as good as the pitching has been, the hitting has been even better for Tennessee. They boast a lineup with four starters (Jared Dickey, Christian Moore, Griffin Merritt and Maui Ahuna) with an average above .300, plus five players (Dickey, Moore, Merritt, Blake Burke and Zane Denton) each with more than 10 home runs. The Vols can hit with the best of them, and Southern Mississippi will need to score a boatload of runs to compete over a three-game set.

For the Golden Eagles’ part, their pitching has been exceptional. Their ace and likely Saturday starter, Tanner Hall, has been one of the most dominant starting pitchers in the NCAA in 2023.

Through 108 IP, he’s posted a 2.08 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, .202 BAA and a 119/32 K/BB ratio. If Hall gets the ball on Saturday, he may be exactly what the Golden Eagles need to silence the Vols’ explosive lineup.

However, once it gets past Hall, it drops off slightly (albeit not horribly), with Niko Mazza (69.2 IP, 4.13 ERA, 84/42 K/BB) and Billy Oldham (72.2 IP, 4.33 ERA, 84/23 K/BB) rounding out their likely rotation for the series.

Southern Miss has its standouts from an offensive perspective, though they certainly do not have the depth that Tennessee has. Their offense was led by Dustin Dickerson (.328, 10 HR, 50 RBI), Slade Wilks (.291, 20 HR, 58 RBI) and Matthew Etzel (.317, 7 HR, 51 RBI), with other players making contributions as well.

With a strong home-field advantage and the best starting pitcher in the series, Southern Miss has a strong chance of pulling off a Game 1 upset; however, it will take a monumental effort to overcome the Vols’ lineup depth over the course of a three-game series.

As a result, the overarching theme of our Southern Mississippi vs. Tennessee predictions is for Tennessee to win the series after struggling with Tanner Hall in Game 1.

Southern Mississippi vs. Tennessee Best Bets & CWS Picks Including Game 1 Money Line

With each team’s strengths and weaknesses in mind, it seems as though Southern Miss has a good chance of winning Game 1. They will likely hand the ball to Tanner Hall to start the game, who has been one of the best starters in Division I; on the other hand, the Vols’ Game 1 starter will likely hold an ERA of over 4.00 heading into the game. This mismatch should bode well for Southern Miss.

Moreover, the Vols have struggled mightily on the road, and Southern Miss has been exceptional at home. While this advantage may even out as the series progresses and the Vols get more comfortable, it could be a major advantage in Game 1. Similarly, Tennessee is in line for a big let-down game after a 14-inning emotional rollercoaster that led to their advance.

As a result, the first of our Southern Mississippi vs. Tennessee predictions is for Southern Miss to win Game 1 and cash in on their (+100) money line odds on DraftKings. While we think Tennessee will end up advancing to Omaha in a 2-1 series win, we think the Golden Eagles steal one from them here with a starting pitching advantage.
