Hendon Hooker Sets High Expectations for Joe Milton III, 2023 Vols
Anytime that the torch is passed to you by an SEC Offensive Player of the Year, there are going to be big shoes to fill. We see it all the time in college. We see it this season in SEC programs outside of Tennessee even. Georgia will be replacing Stetson Bennett. Alabama will replace Bryce Young. But rarely do you see the new guy have a larger preseason hype than the predecessor.
For Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton III, this is exactly the case when it comes to replacing Hendon Hooker. The former Michigan man saw limited action in 2022 following Hooker's injury, but he shined in those spots and displayed a rocket arm, leaving many college pundits eager for more. Milton has been mentioned in Heisman talks and even first-round whispers if he can produce for the Vols.
His mentor, Detroit Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker, believes he can and will do just that. During an interview last week, the newest Tennessee NFL quarterback spoke about his expectations personally for Milton and his alma mater. Hendon stated that he is expecting a national championship, first and foremost. Second, he believes that Joe Milton should win the Heisman Trophy. "I'm expecting a Heisman Trophy; I'm expecting the real deal." Hooker expanded on this thought, adding that Milton is the "best quarterback in the nation, no question about it." This is high praise from a guy who racked up a lot of hardware of his own after waiting for his breakthrough for a while, similar to Milton. There is perhaps no one closer to Milton in the football world than Hooker, so his opinion holds as much weight as any. As we slowly get nearer to the season, Vols nation hopes that Hooker is as good as a prophet as a quarterback.
