Texas QB Quinn Ewers Wins More Weekly Awards After Alabama Win
Those who had doubts about Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers were silenced, at least for now, after Saturday's 34-24 win in Bryant-Denny Stadium over the then No. 4 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide.
After the redshirt sophomore became just the second non-conference quarterback to walk out of Bryant-Denny Stadium with a win since 2007, when the Tide last lost to an out-of-conference opponent at home in Nick Saban's tenure, he is beginning to gain even more national prominence, as he was named the Maxwell Player of the Week, and Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week.
Following what many consider his best game to date as a Longhorn, this shouldn't come as a surprise.
The former Ohio State transfer, who was injured in last season's matchup at home versus Alabama after a hot start, left it all on the field in the rematch, completing 24 of 34 passes for 349 yards and three touchdowns, two of which came in a big fourth-quarter for the Longhorns.
Ewers' strong finish mirrored his strong start, which included an elusive deep ball to Xavier Worthy, which not only took the top off the Tide's defense but resulted in a touchdown on the 44-yard completion.
Then, after Alabama took the lead heading into the fourth quarter, Ewers responded with two scores of his own, both to Adonai Mitchell. The first came in the redzone as Ewers found the former Georgia transfer on a slant. Then, with the Longhorns already by three, Ewers gave Mitchell another dagger touchdown versus the Tide on a 39-yard score.
Ewers and the Longhorns will look to follow up their statement win on Saturday at home versus Wyoming.
