USC Football: Lincoln Riley Earns "Quote of the Week" Nod from Columnist
Following a closer-than-expected win at Arizona State over the weekend, USC head coach Lincoln Riley made highlights during his postgame press conference.
With reporters asking about Caleb Williams's draft stock and ASU's coaching staff, one quote by Riley stuck out above the rest.
According to The Mercury News's John Wilner, Riley's comments about the amount of penalties taken was the quote of the week throughout college football.
Asked to explain USC’s sloppy play (10 penalties) in the closer-than-expected win at Arizona State, Riley went the R-rated route: “Sh**** coaching.” We applaud the honesty. (Via The Mercury News)
The penalties taken by the Trojans were almost costly on Saturday night. The ten penalties taken helped keep ASU in the game into the fourth quarter.
USC was backed up 85 yards throughout the game due to penalties. On the other hand, ASU only took four penalties for 26 yards.
Penalties have been an issue for USC all year.
Last week against Stanford, USC took eight penalties for 85 yards. In the game before that, there were eight penalties for 75 yards.
USC's coaching staff will have to figure out the team's penalty problem as the season goes on.
Over the next four weeks, the Trojans will face ranked Utah and Notre Dame. Next week, they will have Colorado, who have shown they can score points off penalties.
Even though USC is the eighth-ranked team in the country, Riley's comments prove there is more for the team to improve.
