West Virginia Takes Series Over BYU

The Mountaineers blank Cougars for series win

Morgantown, WV - The West Virginia Mountaineers (9-7, 2-1) shutout the BYU Cougars (7-7, 1-2) in the second game of a doubleheader to take the series with a 2-0 win. 

West Virginia grabbed the early 1-0 lead after junior Kyle West dropped a one-out single, sophomore Nick Barrone worked a walk, then freshman delivered an RBI single into centerfield for the one run advantage. 

Senior starting pitcher Derek Clark made his Mountaineer debut. He went five innings, striking out seven and allowed just one hit to get the win.

West Virginia sophomore reliever Robby Porco made his season debut after dealing with an injury he suffered in the offseason. He went two thirds of an inning, walked one, recorded two outs before sophomore Gavin Van Kempen regestered the final out of the sixth inning.  

The Mountaineers added a run in the eighth when sophomore Sam White singled through the left side, sophomore Benjamin Lumsden laid down a bunt for a single, and Ellis Garcia placed a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. BYU opted to intentionally walk West before junior Grant Hussey came into pinch hit and delivered an RBI sacrifice fly to give West Virginia a 2-0 lead. 

Hambleton Oliver came into the game in the eighth to record the final out, then struck out two in the ninth to hold off the Cougars for the 2-0 decision.
