Men’s College World Series Predictions for 2023

Entering the first matchups of the 2023 College World Series, the tournament could be anybody's. Among the eight teams to advance to the 2023 College World Series, Wake Forest is considered the favorite: the team went 52-10 overall and held the nation’s #1 ranking for a large portion of the season.

Wake was the most dominant program in the country – after a solid showing in the Regionals and Super Regionals, the Demon Deacons look to capture a College World Series title; anything less would likely be a disappointment.

Five Wake Forest hitters hit 10+ home runs, led by Brock Wilken (30) and Nick Kurtz (24), while eight players hit .300 or better. They’re also led by ace starter Rhett Lowder, who threw 108 innings of 1.92 ERA baseball en route to a spotless 15-0 record. None of their four starting pitchers own an ERA above 3.00.

Beyond Wake Forest, SEC programs Florida and LSU are considered the next-most likely to win the tournament. The Gators went 50-15 overall this season, led by a lineup that features six players to hit 10+ home runs, five that hit .300 or better, and three players that recorded at least 60 RBI. Jac Caglianone is their anchor, hitting .336 with 31 home runs and adding 69 innings of pitching with a 3.78 ERA and 81 strikeouts.

The LSU Tigers went 48-15 overall, largely led by an offense that features seven players to hit .300 or better (including two who hit .400 or better) and eight players who hit 10 or more home runs. They also boast one of the better-starting staffs in the NCAA, led by Paul Skenes (107 IP, 12-2, 1.77 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, 188 K). They were one of our pre-tournament picks, and we still think they have a great shot to win it all.

Virginia and Tennessee are middle-of-the-pack contenders, though their records of sustained success should bode well for their chances at an upset. Beyond them, there is TCU, Stanford and Oral Roberts, who are longshots to win the tournament. However, at this point in the season, surprises can and do happen.

Best Bets & Picks for the 2023 College World Series Including Wake Forest

Overall, we believe the best bet is to take Wake Forest’s odds to win the 2023 College World Series. With Wake largely considered the favorite to win it all, getting a futures bet in now on Wake Forest to win it all (+275 at DraftKings) can pay huge dividends.

However, if you’re looking for someone beyond the favorite, we think LSU has a great chance of winning it all and cashing in on their (+380) odds if you missed out on our pre-tournament prediction.

Winning the College World Series is about two things: starting pitching and timely hitting. These are two things the Tigers have in spades: the aforementioned Skenes is one of the best Friday-night arms in baseball, while Ty Floyd (7-0, 4.50 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 93 K) makes for a solid follow-up.

The lineup is also maybe the best in the tournament, boasting two .400+ and eight 10+ home run hitters. Pitchers won’t get a break in the Tigers’ lineup, and when pitching staffs wear down toward the end of the tournament, that can be incredibly dangerous.
