🥇 MLB MVP Candidates for 2024: Who are the Favorites?

Since Shohei Ohtani is blowing everyone out of the water when it comes to AL MVP candidates in 2024, we will focus on the three candidates atop the NL MVP favorites shortlist.

Ronald Acuna Jr. MLB MVP Odds (+550 at DraftKings)

Acuna Jr. is one of the most exciting and prominent talents in the game of baseball. Following a scary knee injury in 2021, Acuna Jr. is set to play his first full 162-game season since 2019, and man has he taken advantage. Acuna Jr. is the slight odds-on favorite through a stunningly consistent campaign highlighted by some monster numbers, placing him as the NL leader in stolen bases, and top five in batting average, OPS and WAR. He has effectively been the best player on the best team in baseball and is set to become the first player to ever record 30+ home runs and 60+ stolen bases in a season.

Mookie Betts MLB MVP Odds (+650 at DraftKings)

The do-it-all Dodger, Mookie Betts, has had torrid stretches as the best player in the National League this year. He leads the NL in OPS and WAR while sitting near the top in home runs and various defensive metrics. Where Betts shines is his defensive versatility, bouncing between SS, 2B, CF and RF this season, paired with a top-notch OPS. Betts has bought into modern baseball, and in August his batting average has reached an elite rank to round out his stats. Betts is searching to become the second player in MLB history to win an MVP in both leagues, and thanks to his blazing performance in August, he may just accomplish that feat.

Freddie Freeman MLB MVP Odds (+1200 at DraftKings)

Betts’ teammate, The Los Angeles Dodger first baseman, trails Betts in OPS and home runs but has a .340 batting average and is nearing the franchise record in doubles. But the lack of value at his position has helped limit his WAR in comparison to Betts and Acuna Jr. in the outfield. Freeman has been the model of consistency at the plate with exceptional hit ability, which will keep him in the discussion and among the MVP favorites until the season’s end.

MLB MVP Predictions: Who Will Win in 2024?

For our 2024 MLB MVP predictions, there were a number of different ways we could have gone. However, the most logical approach would be to look at the top two guys, as they appear, to us, to have the best chance of winning the award. First, let's break down the season Los Angeles star Mookie Betts is having.

Betts is carrying an 8.1 WAR in part due to his ridiculous slash line of .313/.411/.611. That alone is enough to have his name thrown into various MLB MVP predictions, but when you take into account his defensive play as well, Betts truly is a do-it-all type of player. He has a perfect .1000 fielding percentage this season.

As for the other candidate in our 2024 MLB MVP predictions, if you though Betts was putting up unreal numbers, just wait until you see what Ronald Acuna Jr. is doing down in Atlanta. He ranks top ten in the league in batting average (.334), home runs (36), RBI (95) and .OPS (.1000) all the while swiping 60+ bags in the process.

Betts is having an unreal year, but he picked a bad time to do it with Acuna Jr. also being right there with him. At the end of the day, our MLB MVP predictions for the NL will side with Ronald Acuna Jr. If you want to make your own 2024 MLB MVP predictions, be sure to do so at any of the aforementioned sportsbooks listed above.

🐕 MLB MVP 2024: Longshot Candidates to Watch

Save any dark horse or longshot picks for the 2024 season when this betting reopens fresh for the following season. With just one month left of regular season play, the pool of players is down to the NL MVP favorites we have detailed. In the AL, Ohtani would have to miss the rest of the season for a conversation around other 2024 candidates to be warranted.

How the MLB MVP is Decided

The award is voted on by 30 members of the Baseball Writers Association of America (one from each Major League city) and is conducted using a weighted score system. WAR has become the primary stat for criteria, but more specific stats like OPS, for offense, and outs above average or defensive runs saved, for defense, help provide a holistic evaluation of MVP candidates as well. The MLB MVP has been translated or equated as the “most important and useful player to the club and to the league".

Recent MLB MVP winners have been among the very top in WAR, OPS and various defensive metrics. Offensive value has trumped defensive value, in the cases of Paul Goldschmidt in 2022 and Bryce Harper in 2021 in the NL, as has team performance, except for Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani’s Angels, who have not made the MLB playoffs since 2014.

In all, the winner is usually a player who is among the best hitters in the league and, at the very least, can hold their own on defense. In the rare case of Ohtani, it's been the freak athlete who can dominate on the mound and at the plate.

Teams With Most MLB MVP Winners

  1. New York Yankees - 23 winners
  2. St. Louis Cardinals - 17 winners
  3. San Francisco Giants & Los Angeles Dodgers - 14 winners

Teams With no MLB MVP Winner

The Arizona Diamondbacks, Tampa Bay Rays and New York Mets have never had an MLB MVP Award winner.

Exceptional home run-hitting seasons from Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge have propelled each to an MVP in the last 10 years. Judge’s 62 2022 home runs were complemented by tremendous defense and a high on-base percentage. If it weren’t for Judge’s insane home run total, the AL MVP odds would have shifted back to Ohtani for the second year in a row.

When analyzing the AL MVP odds in 2024, Ohtani has led the league in home runs himself while being dominant as a starting pitcher. His two-way stardom has led to overwhelming MVP betting odds at DraftKings.

Another note is the lack of outfield production from 2022 NL players. Goldschmidt overcame the rest of the pool because he was the best hitter in the league and no outfielders were contending for the award. Now that more dynamic players like Ronald Acuna Jr. and Mookie Betts are having MVP-caliber seasons, a first baseman like Freddie Freeman, having a similar year to Goldschmidt in 2022, is not the clear-cut choice in 2024.

Since 2013, six right fielders between the two leagues have won, the most of any position. Now, Acuna Jr. and Betts, both right fielders, lead the odds for NL in 2024. Also, twice in the last 10 years have an Angel and Dodger won in the same year. This could be the third time since 2013 if Betts or Freeman meet Ohtani at the podium.

Who Has Won the MLB MVP Most Often?

Controversial MLB superstar Barry Bonds has won the most MVPs and it's not close. Bonds has seven plaques. The next closest is a string of players with three MVPs.

FAQs

❓ How are MLB MVP Odds Determined?

NL and AL MVP odds 2024 have shifted throughout the course of the season, but they are determined by the players who lead their respective league in key categories like WAR and OPS.

❓ Can a Player Win the MLB MVP Multiple Times?

Yes, as mentioned above, players can win an MVP as many years as they play. Considering this is the Most Valuable Player Award, it's quite difficult to repeat the level of play that garners this honor year after year.

❓ Do MLB MVP Odds Vary Across Different Sportsbooks?

❓ When is the MLB MVP Announced?

The MVPs are announced when the Cy Young and other coveted MLB awards are announced: in November following the conclusion of the World Series.
