NFL MVP Candidates for 2023-24: Who Are the Favorites?

To no one’s surprise, leading the way in terms of the current NFL MVP odds are the top quarterbacks in the league. It’s largely been considered a QB award, so let’s take a look at the odds to win NFL MVP for the top favorites:

Patrick Mahomes NFL MVP Odds (+20000 at DraftKings)

The Kansas City Chiefs are fresh off their Super Bowl win over the Philadelphia Eagles, as Mahomes continues to lead them to the closest thing we’ve had to a dynasty since Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

His ability to make every throw imaginable while pulling off acrobatic escapes in the pocket remains unmatched. The Chiefs are an incredible 64-16 when Mahomes starts, and he added toughness to his resume when battling through the 2022-23 playoffs with an ankle injury. Coming off his league-leading 5,250 passing yards, it’s no surprise he led the pack in the NFL MVP odds for 2023-24 heading into the season.

Josh Allen NFL MVP Odds (+3500 at DraftKings)

Another one of the NFL MVP favorites according to the current odds is a true hybrid QB in Josh Allen. Like Joe Burrow, he has an uncanny connection with his top WR - Stefon Diggs. The duo has led the Buffalo Bills to being a true Super Bowl contender since he entered the league.

We mentioned hybrid as Allen is a big signal-caller that has the ability to run with the rock as well as any running back in the NFL. In fact, Allen’s 762 rushing yards in 2022 was nearly the most on the team, just behind Devin Singletary’s 819 yards. However, his seven rushing touchdowns to go along with 35 passing touchdowns makes him a legitimate favorite in the NFL MVP futures.

Jalen Hurts Allen NFL MVP Odds (+20000 at DraftKings)

Let’s wrap up our analysis of the NFL MVP favorites with another QB that was just recently in the Super Bowl. Hurts went through a rollercoaster in college, transferring from Alabama to Oklahoma, only to meet extremely loud doubters heading into the 2022 season.

Not only did he prove them wrong, but he was also leading the way in the odds last season before his shoulder injury. Regardless, he secured a #1 seed for the Philadelphia Eagles, allowing him to rest, and ultimately earn a spot in the Super Bowl. That helped him secure a five-year, $255 million contract extension this past offseason. Hurts would love to prove he’s worth it by living up to the odds to win NFL MVP.

NFL MVP Predictions: Who Will Win in 2023?

Two-time MVP winner Mahomes is the safest prediction to win it again in 2023-24, and deservedly so. Award fatigue is a real dilemma, however, so even if Mahomes continues to do the most without a stacked supporting cast, the likelihood another player gets voted in is enough for us to pass on the Chiefs' superstar at +3500.

We are fading Joe Burrow this season coming off his preseason injury and the lack of changes made to their offense, combined with the promising changes made to other offenses within his division. Allen and Hurts both make for compelling cases, as Allen should bounce back from an injury-riddled campaign while Hurts dances with even more weapons and the same ridiculous O-line in 2023-24.

None of these favorites intrigue us more than Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (-20000 to win MVP at DraftKings). The 2019 MVP has disappeared a bit from the top QB conversation over the past couple of seasons due to injuries and the absence of a consistent, dynamic passing scheme, but with key additions to the receiving group and an aggressive offensive coordinator in Todd Monken entering, Jackson and the Ravens could explode in 2023-24.

Jackson already proved he could be the league's best without a ton of weapons. Now, the dual-threat talent is locked into a big contract and has all the pieces around him to light up the sport in a variety of ways. If he can adapt to a modern-day passing attack, stay healthy and keep up elite running production, the sky's the limit for his MVP odds. He has the potential narrative behind him if he can complete his first full season since 2021, especially if he outduels other QBs on his schedule like Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow, Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence.

NFL MVP 2023-24: Longshot Candidates to Watch

When it comes to long-shots to watch out for entering the 2023-24 NFL campaign, we’re focused on a dual-threat at the QB position - DeShaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns at +30000 odds.

He was still serving his suspension for over half the season last year, so now he’ll have the full set of games to prove his worth. Watson has the dynamic ability to create something out of nothing, which is aided by having arguably the best RB in the NFL next to him. Nick Chubb led the NFL in 20+ yard rushes with 13, was tied for the third-most rushing TDs with 12 and had the third-most rushing yards with 1,525.

The Browns also ensured to give Watson more help on the outside besides just Amari Cooper by grabbing Elijah Moore from the New York Jets. They also have an underrated wideout in Donovan Peoples-Jones, who is a great balance of size and good hands. Cooper was also in the top 10 in terms of first-down receptions, so Watson has the weapons to prove the current NFL MVP odds wrong and is our definitive long-shot pick for the NFL MVP.

How the NFL MVP is Decided

This is a topic that often generates plenty of controversy. While it’s great to analyze the odds to win and top candidates for the NFL MVP, it ultimately comes down to a mix of votes.

Firstly, there are 16 media members that cover the NFL chosen by the league to cast votes. Their selection makes up 80% of the ultimate vote. The rest of the 20% comes from fan votes before the end-all-be-all winner is determined.

As we mentioned above, the most glaring trend for both the current NFL MVP odds for 2023-24 and the award as a whole is that it is a QB-dominant award. To illustrate just how prominent that trend is, a QB has won the award each of the last 10 years. In fact, they’ve won each of the NFL MVP awards since 2001 except for three.

Each of those three were still won by offensive players, specifically RBs. It’s also a great benefit for a player to be on a winning team. One of those RBs was Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings, who is the only player to win the NFL MVP award while being on a team with fewer than 11 wins.

Finally, since 1957, just two defensive players have defied the NFL MVP odds and won the award. That would be Alan Page in 1971 and the great Lawrence Taylor in 1986.

Teams With Most NFL MVP Winners

Below, we’ve also provided a list illustrating which teams have the most winners of the award:
