Who Won OROY in the NFL for 2022?
Last season, New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. In 17 games, Wilson racked up 1,103 receiving yards on 83 catches (147 targets), adding 4 TD and 56 first downs.
With fellow Jets rookie Sauce Gardner winning the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award, the pair became just the third set of teammates to win the award in the same season. It previously occurred in 2017 (Saints RB Alvin Kamara & CB Marshon Lattimore) and 1967 (Lions RB Mel Farr & CB Lem Barney).
While Wilson was certainly deserving of the award, there were several other players who had equally-legitimate claims for being named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2022. Wilson closely edged out Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker Jr. (out of Michigan State) with a 156-129 vote tally. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy also finished among the finalists for the 2022 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
NFL 2023 OROY Best Bets: Who is This Season’s Garrett Wilson?
Like last season, there should be several talented first-year offensive players vying for the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2023. In his senior season as a Longhorn, Robinson took 258 carries for 1580 rushing yards and 18 TD; he also added 19 receptions for 314 yards and 2 additional touchdowns. In his collegiate career, Robinson accumulated 3,410 rushing yards on 539 carries with 33 rushing touchdowns. His career 6.3 yards per carry mark was the ninth-best in the Big 12, going back to 1996. He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons with the eighth overall selection in this year's NFL Draft.
Bryce Young – the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft – won the Heisman Trophy in 2021. While he had a down year in 2022 after dealing with injury, he still tossed 3,328 yards and a 32/5 TD/INT ratio. However, this pales in comparison to his Heisman-winning 2021 effort, when he completed 366 of his 547 passes (66.9%) for 4,872 yards and 47 TD / 7 INT. He was drafted by the Carolina Panthers, who traded with the Chicago Bears for the pick and the opportunity to select the young signal-caller.
It’s overwhelmingly likely that one of these two players wins the award; however, a dark horse candidate may be Jahmyr Gibbs, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions and holds (+900) odds to be named the 2023 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. His landing spot was initially questioned by many, as Detroit seemingly had the position under control with D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams on the depth chart. However, Detroit assuaged those concerns with the surprising-but-not-shocking trade of D’Andre Swift, clearing space for Gibbs to take on a much larger role. On an offense that can be very explosive, Gibbs provides great value for bettors who back his (+900) odds; he’s a perfect bet for those who like long-odd futures bets.
However, while Gibbs is a sneaky value, our top NFL Prediction for the 2023 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year winner is Bijan Robinson. Robinson showed the ability to be an explosive, game-changing every-down back in his time at Texas; moreover, the Falcons selected him early in the first round, against conventional draft wisdom, showing their confidence in the young tailback.
While Atlanta still has Tyler Allgeier (who racked up 1,035 rushing yards in 2022) and Cordarrelle Patterson, we don’t think either of those players pose a significant obstacle to Robinson’s playing time if he’s healthy. Allgeier played admirably in 2022, though he was more of a compiler than an explosive game-changer. He was also drafted in the 5th round, so there’s not a whole lot of incentive to use him over Robinson. Similarly, Patterson is on the wrong side of 30 and showed decreased playmaking ability in 2022 after a breakout 2021 season. Expect Robinson to get the lions’ share of carries, allowing him to leverage his incredible YPC ability into an NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
