An Injury Update on Seattle Mariners' Slugging DH
The Seattle Mariners needed to scratch slugging designated hitter Mitch Garver on Friday night against the Boston Red Sox because of back spasms. Here's the latest.
Seattle Mariners' designated hitter Mitch Garver doesn't sound concerned about the back spasms that caused him to miss Friday night's game against the Boston Red Sox.
Per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com:
Mitch Garver said that the back spasms he's recently experienced shouldn't be a lingering or long-term issue and that he should return to the Mariners' lineup soon.
While it's good that Garver isn't concerned, it doesn't sound like he is a guarantee to play on Saturday, either. For a Mariners team that has razor-thin margins in terms of depth, this is certainly a situation to monitor. After signing a two-year deal with the M's this offseason, Garver is being massively counted on to provide thump in the middle of the order alongside Jorge Polanco and Julio Rodriguez.
Garver is in his eighth year in the big leagues with the Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers and Mariners. He helped the Rangers win the World Series a season ago and won a Silver Slugger in 2019 with the Twins. Always productive, the question has been about Garver's health.
He's never played more than 102 games in a season and only has two seasons over 90 games played in his career. The hope is that by playing him at designated hitter this season, Seattle can keep him healthy and on the field.
Despite his absence, the M's won 1-0 on Friday night behind a great performance from George Kirby. The two teams will play again on Saturday night with Logan Gilbert (SEA) pitching against Kutter Crawford (BOS).
