Houston Astros Claim Former Seattle Mariners Prized Trade Acquisition

Cooper Hummel, who was acquired last offseason by the Seattle Mariners for former American League Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis, has been claimed off waivers by the Houston Astros.

The Houston Astros have claimed former Seattle Mariners C/DH Cooper Hummel off waivers.

Ari Alexander, a Houston TV personality, had the information on social media:

SOURCE: claim C/OF Cooper Hummel off waivers.

Hummel has played in 76 career games in MLB with the Diamondbacks and Mariners.

The Astros had room on the 40-man roster because they transferred pitchers Luis Garcia and Penn Murfee to the 60-day injured list.

Mariners fans will undoubtedly be disappointed to see Hummel land in Houston for fear that the team's bigest rivals will be able to unlock the potential in him that they couldn't.

Hummel, 29, was acquired last offseason by Seattle in exchange for former Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis. Given that Lewis had a lot of potential, there was a lot of faith placed in Hummel by Mariners fans, but it never materialized. He played only 10 games for Seattle at the Major League level, hitting .087.

In the minor leagues, he hit .262 last season. He's a switch-hitter who can catch, DH or play the outfield, so there's certainly some value there if the Astros can get him back on track.

He had joined both the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants this offseason before now landing with Houston.

The Astros are 2-5 this season and will take on the Texas Rangers on Friday night with first pitch coming at 8:05 p.m. ET. As for the Mariners, they are 3-4 and will take on the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night with first pitch also at 8:05 p.m. ET.
