Seattle Mariners Provide Injury Updates on Top Relievers

The Seattle Mariners are 3-2 on the young season despite not having access to two of their top three relievers. However, both Matt Brash and Gregory Santos are making steady progress in their recovery.

The Seattle Mariners are 3-2 this season despite not having access to two of their top relievers. Both Matt Brash and Gregory Santos have yet to pitch this season as they work back from injuries suffered in spring training, but both appear to be on track in terms of their recovery.

Per Adam Jude of the Seattle Times on social media:

Some M’s injury updates:

— Matt Brash threw a bullpen today in AZ and mixed in some sliders. Not yet throwing at max effort but making steady progress.
— Gregory Santos’ MRI came back clean and he began light baseball activities today. Similar situation for Eduard Bazardo.

The M's ability to get both Brash and Santos will eventually be huge as right now the bullpen is awfully thin. Seattle has Andres Munoz and Ryne Stanek on the back end, with Gabe Speier able to pitch in high leverage, but they certainly are counting a lot on their strong starting pitching to take them deep into games. The bridge guys present all kinds of questions and manager Scott Servais is undoubtedly trying to avoid them in big situations.

Jude added this nugget in his written story on both players:

There is no specific timeline for their return, but Brash is ahead of the other two relievers in his recovery. They are not expected to return until sometime in May.

As a result, it certainly seems like the M's could be forced to piece together the 'pen for a lot longer than they'd like.

Brash is 13-8 in his career with a 3.63 ERA. Santos served as the closer for the Chicago White Sox at the end of last season before being traded to Seattle this offseason.

Seattle will play the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 9:40 p.m. ET.
