New York Mets Have an Idea of When J.D. Martinez Will Join Roster

According to reports, slugger J.D. Martinez could join the New York Mets as early as next week.

After signing with the Mets late in the offseason, Martinez has been working at extended spring training but he is close to coming into help New York's lineup.

Per Will Sammon of 'The Athletic:' on social media:

J.D. Martinez will go to an affiliate (the Mets haven’t decided which one). There’s a possibility that he joins the Mets in Atlanta, but that’s not certain.

The series with the Braves begins next Monday so that would be a quick turnaround for Martinez, but either way, he's close to joining the big league club.

Martinez signed a one-year deal with the Mets this offseason despite overtures from the San Francisco Giants.

The 36-year-old is a 13-year veteran who has played with the Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers.

One of the most productive hitters in baseball over the last several years, he's a .287 career hitter with 315 homers and 1,002 RBI. He is coming off a season in which he hit 33 homers for the Dodgers and he also led the majors in RBI in 2018 (130) with the Red Sox.

A six-time All-Star and a World Series champion (2018), Martinez is also a three-time Silver Slugger. He will become the Mets primary designated hitter the minute that he steps into the lineup.

The Mets were rained out in consecutive days and will play a doubleheader on Thursday with the Detroit Tigers.
