Texas Rangers' Max Scherzer Provides Shocking Injury Update

After undergoing back surgery at the end of 2023, Texas Rangers' starting pitcher Max Scherzer is apparently going to be back in just a few weeks. It had originally been thought that he would be out until late June or July.

Texas Rangers' starting pitcher Max Scherzer provided a shocking update on Monday, saying that he thinks he'll be back with the Rangers in early May, rather than the late June or July that was originally thought.

MLB.com had the information, with comments from both Scherzer and manager Bruce Bochy:

Despite initial evaluations placing his likely return near June or July, Scherzer could now be ready in early May, while his first rehab start could potentially come as early as next week.

“We’re not ready to say a date, but we’re looking at early May in being able to come back," said Scherzer.

Scherzer threw 25 pitches of live batting practice at Comerica Park on Monday afternoon, and said the next step is throwing 40 pitches on Friday.

“We’re amazed at where he’s at at this point," said manager Bruce Bochy. "I mean, we were looking at the latter part of June before he’d be on the mound for us. But it’s going to be way before that. And, I’ll be honest. He’s not a spring chicken, but he had upper back surgery and he’s pushed it. But not to the point where I think we’re risking any setback."

Getting Scherzer would be a huge step for the Rangers, who are currently missing him, Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle from the rotation. All three were expected back around the All-Star break, but Scherzer is obviously prepared to beat that projection.

The 39-year-old is one of the toughest pitchers of his generation. When he debuts this year, it will be his 17th year with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Tigers, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and Rangers. He helped the Rangers win the World Series last season and is a three-time Cy Young winner. He's also an eight-time All-Star. In addition to his ring with the Rangers, he won a title in 2019 with the Nationals.

The Rangers are currently 9-8 and in first place in the American League West.
