F1 News: Former Champion Supports Daughter As Future Formula One Star
Two-time Formula 1 world champion Mika Hakkinen has always been a dominant force on the track. The Finnish driver secured back-to-back world titles with McLaren in 1998 and 1999, and now, the spotlight may soon be shared with another Hakkinen—his 12-year-old daughter, Ella.
In a candid moment with Sport1, Hakkinen shared his thoughts on Ella's budding racing ambitions: "She can do it," he confidently expressed. He continued:
"But now my 12-year-old daughter Ella drives, as does my 9-year-old son Daniel. She's very talented, really special, has a lot of power...
"I have to be very careful what I say now so that I don't build up pressure. But racing today is looking for women, wants women. And she really loves racing. So I support them as best I can."

Despite her young age, Hakkinen believes Ella possesses a tangible passion and talent for racing, attributes that undoubtedly echo her father's legendary prowess. Hakkinen’s belief in her potential isn't just rooted in paternal pride. He acknowledges the challenges and commitment required to reach the pinnacle of the sport but remains steadfast in his confidence:
"Making it into Formula 1 one day is of course a very tough road. If she wants to come here, she has to do everything, work very hard. Then she can do it. Of course I have experience of how to prepare for everything, up to how to win world championships. So I could help her to a certain extent. But of course you have to see how it develops..."
There has been an emphasis on encouraging more women to join the world of motorsports. The F1 Academy, with Susie Wolff as the Managing Director, is providing young women with the platform and racing series that they need to gain a following and pave a career path with the end goal in Formula One.
