U.S. Open: Sights and Scenes From Final Round at Torrey Pines

Spain's Jon Rahm reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking with his one-stroke U.S. Open win over Louis Oosthuizen on Sunday at Torrey Pines Golf Course. For Rahm, the win marked his first major title and eighth top-10 major finish in 14 starts since 2018.

The birdie moved Rahm to 6-under-par 278 for the championship and ultimately a one-stroke win over Louis Oosthuizen. Rahm, 26, became Spain's first U.S. Open champion and fourth major champion, joining Sergio Garcia, Jose Maria Olazabal and Seve Ballesteros. 

Louis Oosthuizen tips his hat to the gallery after making a birdie on the 72nd hole to finish at 5-under-279, one shot behind champion Jon Rahm. Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open champion, finished runner up at a major for the sixth time in his career. Playing in the final group, Oosthuizen made a bogey at the par-4 17th hole, then needed an eagle on the 18th to force a playoff with Rahm.  

Harris English entered Sunday well down the leaderboard, sitting at even-par 213 through three rounds. English proceeded to shoot a 3-under 68 and moved up the board as all but two players — Jon Rahm and Louis Oosthuizen — ahead of him dropped below. English, 31, finished in solo third, one spot better than his fourth-place finish at the 2020 U.S. Open last September.  

Brooks Koepka reacts to his missed putt on the 1st green during Sunday's final round. Koepka, a four-time major champion and two-time U.S. Open champion, began his day at even-par 213 and found himself in contention at 4-under after a birdie on the 15th hole. Koepka, though, bogeyed the 16th and 18th holes, respective, to finish at 2-under 282 and tied for fourth. 

Mackenzie Hughes looks at his ball stuck in the tree by the 11th green. Hughes, who held a share of the 54-hole lead, made a double-bogey 5 at the par-3 hole en route to an inward-nine 41. The Canadian finished with 6-over 77 and tied for 15th at 1-over 285.

Bryson DeChambeau plays his shot from the 4th fairway rope line during Sunday's final round. DeChambeau, seeking to win his second U.S. Open title in nine months, hit only two fairways on the afternoon and slid down the leaderboard with a 44 on the inward nine that included a quadruple 8 on the 17th hole. DeChambeau signed for a 77 and finished tied for 26th at 3-over 287.  

Rory McIlroy takes a drop after getting relief on the 1st green during the U.S. Open's final round on Sunday. McIlroy, seeking to win his second U.S. Open title and first major since 2014, shot a final-round 73 and finished T7 at 1-under 283.

Xander Schauffele looks over his putt on the 1st green during the U.S. Open's final round. Schauffele shot a final-round 71 to finish at 1-under 283, tying for seventh. Schauffele recorded his fifth straight top-10 U.S. Open finish.

Paul Casey wonders what might have been after missing a birdie putt on the 6th hole during the U.S. Open's final round. Casey shot a final-round 70 to complete a 5-under-par weekend and tied him for seventh in the championship.  

Justin Thomas plays his shot from the 1st fairway rough during the U.S. Open's final round. Thomas made a brief move up the leaderboard with consecutive birdies at holes Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Double bogeys at the 10th and 16th holes, though, tied Thomas for 19th at 2-over 286.
